Chidi used to dread group hangouts. Not because he did not enjoy his friends, he loved them. But every outing seemed to end the same way: a bill split evenly, and him quietly calculating whether groceries would suffer for it.

Being single and financially stretched has its own kind of loneliness. There is pressure to keep up, to look like you have it together, to not be “that friend” who always says no.

The Guilt Nobody Talks About

Add faith into the mix, and the guilt multiplies. Shouldn’t trusting God mean not stressing about money? Chidi stopped attending church events for a season. Not from doubt, but from shame. He did not want to explain why he could not contribute to another fundraiser or gift. Isolation felt safer than embarrassment.

That is the quiet lie financial stress tells single people: that struggling somehow means you are behind, unworthy, or forgotten by God.

A Season, Not a Sentence

What pulled Chidi back was not a windfall. It was a conversation with his small group leader, who admitted she had walked through the same thing years earlier, figuring out budgets alone, afraid to say she was struggling. She reminded him that financial hardship is not a measure of God’s provision or his character. It is a season, not a sentence. Paul’s words held: my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

That verse did not erase Chidi’s bank balance. But it reframed the pressure. He started being honest with his friends about what he could and could not do, and found most of them respected it more than the version of him that pretended everything was fine.

Financial stress as a single person is real, and pretending otherwise doesn’t make it holy. What matters is not letting a tight season convince you you’re behind, unworthy, or forgotten. Provision doesn’t always look like abundance. Sometimes it looks like community that sees you honestly and stays anyway.

Chidi still budgets carefully. He still says no to things he can’t afford. But he no longer disappears when money gets tight, and that shift changed more than his bank account. Being broke is a circumstance. It was never who Chidi was.

Is a tight season making you feel forgotten, or is it just a season? Sit with that for a moment.
